The short answer
A useful driveway quote states what will be built beneath the surface as clearly as the finish you will see. Use this checklist when comparing contractors: record the same area, construction scope and exclusions for each quote before comparing the total.

Include photographs of the frontage, thresholds and existing damage. Measure the usable width of the access route and identify any restricted delivery or parking arrangements. If you do not know the existing base or drain route, say so.

Ask these five questions
- What supports the surface? Ask for the proposed construction and why it suits the ground and vehicle use. Avoid relying on the finish name alone.
- Where does rainwater go? A channel without an outlet is an incomplete answer. Confirm the site drainage and any investigation or consent needed.
- What changes the price? Identify provisional items and how additional work will be measured, priced and authorised.
- How is access maintained? Record the work sequence, pedestrian arrangements and when vehicles can use the finished surface.
- What is handed over? Ask for care instructions, the written scope, applicable guarantee terms and any agreed construction records.
Compare totals fairly
A lower quote may be a genuinely more efficient solution, a different finish or a different scope. Ask about omissions before assuming either good value or poor workmanship. A resurfacing price should not be compared directly with full removal and reconstruction.

Confirm drainage and permissions

Keep a clear written record
Keep the agreed quotation, drawings, product details, payment stages and change records together. Check who is contracting with you and ask about relevant insurance and guarantee conditions; a marketing badge is not a substitute for the terms applying to your project.
