The direct answer

Patios & Block Paving: what matters most?

A premium patio feels simple because the difficult details are controlled: thresholds, falls, steps, retaining edges, drainage, cut patterns and the relationship with planting and lawns.

Our first survey focuses on the variables that change method, risk and price. The written scope then states the included work, important assumptions and the information or approvals still required.

Typical scope

What we can include

  • Natural stone and porcelain patio preparation
  • Block paving and paths
  • Excavation and compacted sub-bases
  • Steps, kerbs and retaining edges
  • Drainage channels and falls
  • Repointing, repairs and area extensions

Every site is different. The quotation—not a generic web list—defines the final package.

Devil in the detail

Four issues worth resolving before work starts.

Good planning makes risk visible while there is still time to change the method.

01

Threshold levels

Paving must meet doors, damp-proof courses and air bricks without creating water or moisture problems.

02

Movement

Weak bases, poor edge restraint and unsuitable bedding cause rocking, cracking and open joints.

03

Slippery or stained finishes

Material choice, falls, shade and maintenance all affect long-term appearance and safety.

04

Awkward cuts

Setting-out around walls, drains and steps determines whether the finished work looks considered or improvised.

How the work progresses

A six-stage route from question to handover.

The exact construction changes; the discipline of resolving information before burying it does not.

  1. 1

    Discuss use, look and budget

  2. 2

    Survey levels and drainage

  3. 3

Set out joints, edges and steps

  4. 4

    Excavate and build the sub-base

  5. 5

Lay, cut and joint the surface

  6. 6

    Clean, inspect and explain aftercare

Frequently asked

Patios & Block Paving questions

Clear answers before commitment make the survey, quotation and build easier to compare.

How deep should a patio sub-base be?

It depends on ground and use. The construction needs competent formation, suitable compacted material and a bedding system matched to the paving. We specify it after assessing the site.

Porcelain or natural stone?

Porcelain offers consistent dimensions and low porosity; natural stone has genuine variation and character. Detailing, slip performance, maintenance and the setting all matter.

Can you fix a patio that holds water?

Yes, after identifying whether the cause is blocked drainage, failed joints, local settlement or incorrect overall falls. Repair may be local or require relaying a larger area.

Do you build steps and retaining edges?

Yes. Changes in level are designed with safe proportions, stable foundations and a finish coordinated with the main paving.
